Understanding Perfectionism: Perfectionism is characterized by the desire to achieve at a perfect level at the expense of making progress. According to The Hardin Group, it is estimated that 92% of people struggle with perfectionism. Which makes sense in a market-driven, achievement-oriented society. 

Perfectionism is essentially an invisible thread deeply woven into the social fabric influencing our thought patterns, habits, and (almost inevitably) our self-worth. It's marked by the never-ending pursuit of flawlessness, paralyzing fear of failure, and constant chase for validation. 

While striving for excellence is admirable, perfectionism takes it to an extreme, as it warps ambition into shame, anxiety, self-doubt, and burnout. All of which are counterproductive to genuine, sustainable, and holistic self-improvement.

The Illusion of Perfection: Whether through social media advertising, or culturally enforced expectations, we're bombarded with images of what seems like perfection every day. I mean how many 21-year-old ‘digital marketers’ with supercars do we need to see?

We all know that most of what we see isn’t real, yet we’ve all been conditioned to believe that aspiring to perfection will lead us to success and happiness. That changing what our life looks like on the outside will be the cure for what we feel on the inside. However, this pursuit often leaves 99% of us feeling inadequate and trapped in a cycle of unproductive comparison and self-criticism rooted in something that isn’t even real.

The Impact of Perfectionism: Perfectionism can manifest in various aspects of our lives, from our careers to our relationships and even our own self-image. It creates unrealistic standards that we never realize are impossible to meet and maintain, leading to feelings of inadequacy and dissatisfaction with an otherwise acceptable situation. 

Moreover, it hinders our ability to take risks and embrace failure as a natural part of the growing process. Over time, we learn to optimize what our life LOOKS like instead of what it FEELS like because we come to realize maintaining the image of having it all together is impossibly difficult in the long term.

Breaking Free from Perfectionism: It’s not what many ambitious people want to hear, but the journey to overcoming perfectionism begins with self-awareness and self-compassion. It's about recognizing the harmful patterns of thought and behavior and challenging them with empathy and understanding. Once you are aware of the connection between the thoughts in your head & the behaviors you exhibit, you can see your situation for what it is. Understanding is the precursor for compassion, and that includes with ourselves.

Here are 5 strategies to help you break free from the shackles of perfectionism:

Embrace Imperfection: Instead of striving for flawless outcomes, embrace the beauty of imperfection. Understand that making mistakes is inevitable and necessary for growth. Celebrate your progress, no matter how small, and continually acknowledge that perfection is an illusion and that there is immeasurable value in the journey.

Set Realistic Goals: Rather than setting unrealistic expectations, set achievable goals that align with your values and priorities. Break them down into manageable micro-steps and focus on progress rather than perfection. Most of us look at people’s highlight reels & not the behind the scenes that got them there. Remember that it's okay to adjust your goals as you learn and grow. In fact, it would be unusual for the path toward your goals not to change when presented with new information.

Practice Consistent Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself, especially in moments of failure or setback. Treat yourself with the same empathy and understanding that you would offer to a friend. Remember that your achievements or mistakes do not determine your worth. You are a human being, not a human doing. Ask yourself what judgments you fear receiving because of your imperfections and why they hold so much power over you. Is avoiding those judgments an acceptable price to pay in exchange for your dreams?

Challenge Negative Thoughts: Learn to recognize and challenge the negative thoughts and beliefs that fuel perfectionism. Also, aim to recognize when negative thoughts occur. Is it as soon as you encounter an obstacle? Or do they arise later in the process? What about when you consume social media content? Replace them with more realistic and compassionate perspectives. Become more intentional about the environments you place yourself in as well as the content you consume. And cultivate a growth mindset that sees failure as an opportunity for learning and improvement and that your ability level is not fixed.

Seek Support: Be bold and reach out for support from friends, family, or a therapist/counselor. Surround yourself with people who demand excellence from you, but also accept you for who you are and encourage you to embrace your imperfections. Remember that you're not alone in this journey.
